our friends, the books

Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most accessible and wisest of counselors, and the most patient of teachers.  ~Charles W. Eliot

The other day, while reading a book out loud, I got to thinking how many books we read around here.  Specifically, how many books at one time.  And I thought how amazing it is that we can keep the stories straight, and be able to follow the plot from one book to the next.  But, of course, we are able to know many people, and know them from one visit to the next, not confusing one with the other.  And these books certainly are our friends.

Here's a snap shot list of the books we are reading right now:

The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling  (mom read aloud)
The Knights Tales Collection by Gerald Morris  (a book on cd for car time)
Song of the Swallows by Leo Politi (science study on swallow migration and CA History)
Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'dell (mom read aloud for California History)

And then we're each reading our own book for pleasure as well.  Ruby is working her way through Beverly Cleary, and Ginger is in love with Rose Wilder (daughter of Laura Ingalls Wilder).

I'm just about to start Cold Sassy Tree by Olive Ann Burns , a suggestion from my mother in law.

What are you reading?
