We really like hanging out in nature, especially if it's near the beach. And we will often bring along a picnic and a nature journal. This way we can sit and relax and be intentional about observing what's going on around us. We've seen whales, hawks, bunnies, otters, dolphins, tide pool creatures, and countless varieties of plants. When we focus on just one discovery, draw it, learn it's name and special details, it becomes a special lifelong friend.
Our nature journals are so fun to make and look through. I really wanted to improve my watercoloring skills so that my journal could become more of a work of art as well as a journal of discoveries. Everyday Watercolor by Jenna Rainey has been a fabulous book in teaching us the skill of watercoloring starting at the very basic of levels, which we needed!
Everyday Watercolor by Jenna Rainey begins at the very beginning with how much water to add to your brush and progresses into practicing wet on wet and wet on dry brush strokes and techniques in small actionable daily lessons. As with any new skill, Jenna Rainey reminds us that it takes daily practice to become familiar and comfortable with your tools.
As we learn to watercolor, we've enjoyed taking them outside and painting in nature. Even if we're not painting our nature finds, but practicing our painting skills with abstract designs, we still feel like we're getting the best of both worlds, nature and art!
