Living as long as I did on the East Side of Santa Cruz, it was normal to hear the young surfers call out with pride where they were from and where they felt they belonged. You would often hear "East side, my side!", or "ESL" (east side local), or "East Side Pride". This was in opposition to the surfers on the west side of town. The West Siders.
Now that I live on the central coast, it's fun to see the young surfers do their Morro Rock handshake, or their "3 stacks and a rock" hand sign.
I'm bringing that pride of place and belonging into my living room. Pride of family. We may start spray painting this "W" in random places, and we're definitely learning a hand signal.
